Tae Kwon Do Yeon Oh Kwan
Very generally, Taekwondo means “The Way of Kicking and Punching”. In the traditional sense, it is a hard style martial that carries emphasis on hard strikes with the hand and high, flashy kicks with the feet. In addition to hand strikes and kicks, students will learn blocking movements, and stances that promote good balance and movement. Katas, or forms, also feature prominently in the curriculum, These pre-arranged sequences of movements help teach students to smoothly and effectively combine the basic techniques.
In our school, we founded own eclectic style of Tae Kwon Do called Yeon Oh Kwan. Yeon Oh Kwan borrows elements from other martial arts to help create a more well-rounded martial artist. Kwon Bup techniques are inspired by Kenpo. Like forms they feature a set series of movements, but placed directly in the context of a defense from a common attack.
Besides technique and curriculum, we also encourage a strong sense of family at our school. All interactions among students and instructors are based on respect and understanding. We not only strive to make good martial artists, but we want to help develop respectful and respectable students.
Dance Kwon Do
South Elgin Martial Arts’ own Dance Kwon Do program uses uses high energy music to get kids moving and keep them interested. While not martial arts in the traditional sense, we have found, especially with younger children, that maintaining interest is at least as important as teaching solid technique. Mixing in a little Dance Kwon Do helps break up the training routine and keep kids excited.
